Battle Ground Art Alliance Art Show

Art Alliance

The Battle Ground Art Alliance will show several works during the 50+ Connections Expo. All items will be for sale. The artists work in a variety of media including oils, watercolors, acrylics, pastels, drawings, handmade prints, mixed media, collages, art quilts, jewelry, sculpture, pottery, glass, textiles and woodwork. Many member artists are expected to take part and display three to four pieces each. Battle Ground Art Alliance formed as a 501(C-3) in 2001 to support local artists and bring more art experiences to the community. Its major fundraiser is a Spring Show and Sale open to all artists in Southwest Washington on May 16- 17 at the new Battle Ground Community Center. The Alliance is a Cornerstone Member of the Battle Ground library, and funds a scholarship through Clark College. Members of the Alliance have volunteer to teach and demonstrate their art at the after school programs, and judge an art shows at Maple Grove School. It's the only local group of its kind that members work with all different media. Members range from novices to established professionals. The purpose of the alliance is to support and encourage artists in the community, and to increase public awareness of the arts through exhibitions and community outreach. Wii Demonstration at Van Mall Retirement and Assisted Living Booth

Perhaps Nintendo didn't have senior citizens in mind when they designed their interactive video game system "Wii", but the life-like gaming system has caught on with residents at Van Mall Retirement Community in Vancouver, Washington. From boxing to bowling, golf, tennis and baseball, residents at this Leisure Care community have lots of fun while playing the Wii together. One distinct feature of the Wii is the remote, known as the Wiimote. The "Wiimote", allows the user to interact with items on screen via movement and pointing through the use their special technology. So, in a tennis game, the player moves the game controller like a tennis racket, or simulates a baseball swing while trying to hit a home run. On April 19, Van Mall will be demonstrating the Wii at the Expo. Everyone is welcome to stop by and learn more about the Wii and Van Mall during this time.

Expo Goes Wild On Wildlife

wildlife pic At the 2009 Expo you can get up close and personal with a falcon and other wild birds of prey! You will see first hand how magnificent and beautiful these animals really are as Cathy Parent Wright shares her passion for these birds and other wild life. Cathi's Ridgefield-based firm Wild on Wildlife disseminates information about natural history, conservation and wildlife. Through a special Fish and Wildlife Services education permit, Wright is able to show these birds of prey in her educational outreach.

Cathi Parent Wright has had a 30 year career educating the public about wildlife and conservation. A 1974 graduate of Fort Vancouver High School, Wright, 52, has always loved animals. She was inspired to become a marine mammal trainer by the TV show Flipper and went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts in biology from Central Washington University in 1979. She has worked at the Oregon Zoo in Portland, and as a wildlife specialist at the High Desert Museum in Bend, Oregon. At the Oregon Zoo, Wright presented bird shows and talks at the zoo and throughout the community at school assemblies, special events and shows. She has worked with birds of all sizes and shapes.
