Who is the typical AmeriCorps VISTA member?

The typical VISTA member wants to make a difference!  AmeriCorps VISTA is open to all U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent resident aliens age 18 and older.  Members commit to at least one full year of full time service helping to make their community a better place to live and to alleviate the causes of poverty in low-income communities.  VISTA members receive:

  • A modest living stipend
  • Basic health coverage
  • Professional Work Experience
  • Free training
  • Forbearance or deferment of eligible student loans whiel serving
  • The option of a $5,815 Eli Segal Education Award or $1,500 cash stipend after successful completion of service term
  • One year of non-competitive eligibility for federal employment
